IPOH: Wives of elected representatives play a vital role in determining their success, acting as a giver of spiritual care, support and encouragement, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

"As wives, they take care of us and our families. They're our penghibur (entertainers) and our companions.

"Only then, we can be effective and likeable Barisan Nasional leaders," he said, jokingly adding that because of the wives' contributions, it would be wise to consider granting the requests they make.

Najib was delivering his speech at the Barison Nasional Wives of Elected Representatives Annual Programme dinner here on Saturday.

Bernama quoted Najib as saying that with a sense of belonging and togetherness, "there is no reason we cannot face all the challenges ahead and this is what I stress as team work between an elected representative and wife."

"This is very important for us because if our wives play their role like this, it means that our heads are calm and not frayed.

"If our wives started acting up, our heads are frayed and we cannot become good leaders or elected representatives," he said.

Najib congratulated the Sabah contingent for winning the overall champion title for the 12th consecutive year.

It was organised by Perak Association of State Assemblymen's Wives (Baiduri).
