Penang drug gangs busted

GEORGE TOWN: Police busted a drug processing and trafficking ring run by two of Penang's most notorious gangs - Sio Sam Ong and Gang 04 - and seized RM1.5mil worth of drugs and cash.

Three Sio Sam Ong members in charge of the trafficking side were arrested in Butterworth. Two Gang 04 members were nabbed as police unearthed a drug lab in Bayan Lepas.

The raids on Thursday were conducted by the state Narcotics CID department and Bukit Aman’s Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (Sting).

The drugs consisted of 24.75kg of heroin, 1.23kg of heroin base, 0.6kg of syabu and 24kg of caffeine with cash in Hong Kong dollars, Yuan and Thai bhat.

Penang police chief Senior Deputy Comm DAtuk Wira Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the five suspects, aged 27 to 53, would be remanded until Monday.
