MIC will hold fresh elections, says Palanivel

PETALING JAYA: MIC will adhere to the Registrar of Societies (RoS) call to hold fresh elections, says Datuk Seri G. Palanivel (pic).

The MIC president's response comes after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak asked him to abide by the decision of the courts and the RoS.

"When I talked to him on Friday, he said to go for fresh elections … I will go for fresh elections," Palanivel told The Star Online.

Earlier on Sunday, Najib had tweeted for Palanivel to "explain" the comments he made at a special MIC gathering at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) on Saturday.

"I'll summon @GPalanivel to explain his reported comments at PWTC," tweeted Najib.

"He should stop blaming others and must abide by the decision of the courts and RoS," Najib had tweeted.

Palanivel told thousands of supporters on Saturday that Najib and Barisan Nasional "got involved in pressuring MIC to reject the 2013 election results".

He said that since then, the party was taken to court to challenge the directive by the RoS to hold re-election of all posts.

However, when asked about Najib wanting him to explain his comments at PWTC on Saturday, Palanivel did not comment.

The High Court on June 16 dismissed two judicial review applications filed by Palanivel and others in relation to the RoS directive for the party to hold fresh elections.

It upheld the RoS directive for the party to hold re-elections at all levels (branches and divisions) including the president’s post.

MIC is in disarray at the moment, with two rival factions claiming to be in charge of the party.
