Study loan of Malaysian student in UK child porn case suspended

KUALA LUMPUR: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) has suspended the study loan of an Imperial College London student from Malaysia who was sentenced to jail for possession of over 30,000 extreme child pornographic materials.

“MARA views seriously any offence committed by students under its sponsorship, to ensure that the country’s vision of producing successful role models with integrity is secured,” it said in a statement on Saturday.

On Friday, UK newspapers reported that student Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin had been busted in his bedroom in Queensborough Terrace, London on Nov 21 last year. He was found to be using his laptop, sitting next to a life-sized mannequin of a boy.

In his computer was a cache of vile images of child pornography and videos of minors being abused. Many of the files were classified as Category A, meaning they depicted the most extreme form of abuse.

Nur Fitri was reportedly sentenced to five years’ jail after pleading guilty to 13 offences, including possession of indecent images and videos of children, with intent to distribute the material.

Mara added that Nur Fitri could be deported in the next three to four weeks, claiming that the sentence passed on the 23-year-old was only nine-months.

It said the prison sentence had been backdated to November 2014 when Nur Fitri was first arrested.

“Based on Visa and Immigration laws in the United Kingdom, a person who has carried out 2/3 of his prison sentence can be deported back to his country of origin. This means he can be sent home in the next three to four weeks from the date of conviction,” it said.
