PETALING JAYA: A group of 25 people arrested during an anti-GST rally at the Federal Customs headquarters were charged at the Sessions Court here for failure to disperse when instructed by the police.
Among the 25 were PSM central committee member and Sungai Siput MP Dr D. Michael Jeyakumar, secretary-general S. Arutchelvan and youth chief K. S. Bawani, PAS Kuala Krai MP Dr Hatta Ramli, Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia chief Badrul Hisham Shaharin, and activist Muhammmad Safwan Anang.
They were jointly charged with refusing to heed a police order to disperse, at 5pm on March 23, while gathered at the Federal Customs headquarters along Jalan SS 6/3, Kelana Jaya.
Under Section 21(3) of the Peaceful Assembly Act, the group faces a fine of up to RM20,000.
DPP Suhaimi Ibrahim acted for the prosecution, while the accused were represented by 11 lawyers, namely M. Visvanathan, Roger Chen, Fadhilah Fazil, Chan Wen Hui, Dinesh Muthal, Joshua Tay, Faridah Muhammad, Mohd Zaki Sukery, Mohd Fitry Hussain, Zulhazmi Shariff, Melissa Sasidaran.
Judge Yasmin Abdul Razak allowed bail at RM3,000 with one surety, each.
The court fixed May 14 for next mention.
