HULU SELANGOR: Soil movement at Bukit Beruntung landslide site is down to minimal levels, but monitoring is crucial to ensure the area is safe before residents can move back in.

"There is still movement in the soil and although it is quite minimal, it still has to be monitored," said Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali after visiting the site on Tuesday.

Earlier in the morning, the Fire and Rescue Department confirmed that it was safe for residents of block K, one of the two affected apartment blocks, to return home.

Azmin said the Public Works Department (JKR) and the Public Works Institute of Malaysia (Ikram) found movement in the soil in the area of the landslide in the afternoon.

He said the decision not to allow the residents to return home was due to the soil movement detected.

"This morning, the soil was stable but in the afternoon, JKR detected minimal movement towards Block K, possibly due to the weather. That's why they withdrew their decision to allow residents to return home.

"If JKR and Ikram can assure that it is safe for them to return then we will allow the residents go back to their homes," he said adding that the time frame set to monitor the soil movement was from three days to a week.

Azmin said that the apartment's management was arranging for concrete blocks to support the existing soil barrier.

He added that the state had also agreed to give aid of RM300 to each family affected.

He said that JKR was looking into the total cost of repairs, with initial costs already amounting to RM500,000.

Azmin said that the state government was ready to bear the cost.

About 2,000 people had to be evacuated from their homes on Monday in Teratai Apartment in Bukit Beruntung here after a landslide caused major cracks on the road and soil barriers, just metres away from their apartment block.

As of Tuesday afternoon, a total of 158 families had been registered in temporary shelters.
