Jeram Toi park closed after four contract leptospirosis

SEREMBAN: The popular Jeram Toi waterfall and recreational park near here has been closed for two weeks after four youths contracted leptospirosis or rat urine disease.

The four, aged between 15 and 18 years, went to the waterfall two weeks ago for a swim and came down with fever several days later.

State Health director Datuk Dr Zailan Adnan said the four had been admitted at the Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital for treatment.

Their condition was stable.

“We were notified of the case on Oct 3 and once their diagnosis was confirmed, we immediately ordered the recreational area closed,” she said.

Dr Zailan said the health and local authorities would clean up the area within the next couple of days.

She advised picnickers not to throw food or waste in the area as this would attract rodents, as well as other animals which could be carriers of the disease.

As of Aug 24, 28 deaths nationwide caused by the disease have been reported.
