KUALA KANGSAR: Two women were killed and more than 10 people injured in a five-vehicle pile-up at KM255.9 of the North-South Expressway near the Menora Tunnel, causing a 10km traffic crawl.
Another male victim, believed to be the brother of one of the women, sustained serious injuries. The morning incident, coming on the eve of Hari Raya Haji when thousands of city folks were heading home for the celebration, resulted in heavy congestion on the northbound lane of the expressway.
The congestion only started to ease after the Kuala Kangsar Fire and Rescue Department cleared the accident site at about 3pm.
Kuala Kangsar OCPD ACP Ghuzlan Salleh said the incident could have stemmed from an initial collision between a lorry transporting tiles and a Proton Saga.
“Three other motorists then lost control of their vehicles when they were trying to avoid the crash and got into a collision. But we are still investigating the cause of the accident.
“The lorry was believed to be travelling from Johor to Penang,” he said, adding that the lorry driver was among those injured during the 11.30am incident yesterday.
