Fuming over choking haze

PETALING JAYA: The choking haze has dampened Hari Raya celebrations and lessened the fun for many people who vented their frustration in cyberspace.

On Facebook, Mustaniz Mohd Yunos shared his story of a futile attempt to locate a relative’s house in Sentul: “Been past half an hour now, still not found. The haze seems like a magical mist that literally makes us lose focus.”

For Napsiah Wan Salleh, stepping outdoors was akin to being in a sauna albeit with the air smelling of burnt padi husks.

“Pity the kids who usually make their rounds from house to house. They need face masks or suffer from the poor air quality.”

Johor resident Ahmad Zulkepli Md Tamami has an unpleasant surprise when returned to Klang for Hari Raya two days ago.

“As soon I arrived and got out of the car, I inhaled smoke-like air. Not the fresh air of yesteryears.”

Nurshuhada Sharon, who was looking forward to taking her children out and about during their long-awaited holidays, posted: “But even in the house, I am breathing in smoke and feeling dizzy, mmm ... why lah, what break?”

Apple Rica Abella advised her friends to stay indoors after writing: “Have lots of fluids. It’s so dark with the haze in my area.”

Huda Limau Mantak of Port Klang, who went for Hari Raya visits in Klang and Kuala Lumpur, wrote that she came down with flu last night even after drinking a lot of water. “And my flu is worsening today due to the haze.”

Cheng Yi, who relies on air filters at home after her children fell sick from the haze, said she was frustrated by the return of hazy weather this year.

“Gone were the days when we could freely take our kids out for exciting outdoor activities at the zoo, bird park and playground. I hope the authorities can take action to solve this problem for the people!” she posted.

Azreen Aznan said the haze was bad as his son was asthmatic.

“I get stressed out too. What’s the relevant ministry doing?” he asked.

Behrooz Banisalam lamented that the haze had affected her holiday plans.

“Can’t swim, can’t jog, can’t go cycling and can’t even open the windows! Sigh,” she posted.

But in spite of the haze, some people fully enjoyed the festive occasion.

Izzy Anni Arope said the lovely company of family members and friends from all backgrounds more than compensated for the hazy situation.

“We accept all blessings and should be in a constant state of gratitude.”
