KUALA LUMPUR: Seputeh MP Teresa Kok (pic) has lodged a police report against a group of supposed Muslim NGOs, which on Thursday, offered a RM500 reward for anyone who could slap her.
Kok said Friday she was disappointed that the group was making threats against a woman about, what she felt, was a non-existent issue.
"They are putting words in my mouth. I didn't say anything about Malay rights or Muslims in the video. It was all political satire and they are making it seem like I am inciting hatred against Malays and Muslims.
"I think their statements violate the law and I hope the police will investigate this.
"I also wonder if politicians in Barisan are okay with NGOs making threats against women. They can disagree with my video but it would be nice to see them take a stand against promoting violence against women," Kok said, outside the Tun H.S Lee station.
Flanked by Pakatan Rakyat leaders and members of the public, Kok called the RM500 slap bounty on her ridiculous.
"Whoever needs the RM500, I can afford to give them-lah," she joked.
On Thursday, a group of about 50 people claiming to be part of the Council of Muslim NGOs, protested along Jalan Tun Perak against Kok's video and also slammed "chauvinistic leaders" who were using current issues to run down Malay leaders and fan hatred against them.
They also offered a RM500 reward to anyone who succeeded in slapping Kok. The reward was later raised to RM1,200.
The protesters then slaughtered chickens and smeared their blood on a poster with faces of Kok, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, Machang Bubuk MP Lee Khai Loon on them.
This is the latest of threats against the Seputeh MP, who says she has also received vulgar, threatening SMSes and nonsensical calls in the middle of the night after she uploaded her Chinese New Year video on Jan 27.
In the video clip, Kok posed as a feng shui talk show host and had “panellists” poke fun at various national issues, including the education system, rising cost of living, public safety and the foreign intrusion into Sabah in February last year.
Selangor DAP Wanita chairperson Hannah Yeoh said the wing viewed the incident very seriously.
"I hope the police and the Home Minister have the will to go after these NGOs who are trying to incite violence against an elected representative.
"My greatest concern is their ability to create something out of nothing. Just a few weeks ago, I experienced the same thing where someone posted a fake quote by me to make Muslims hate me. I haven't gotten any updates by police on that," said Yeoh, referring to a picture where a pregnant Malay woman was sitting cross-legged on the LRT next to a doctored image of Yeoh saying that doing so was good for pregnant women.
She also called on the Registrar of Societies to stop bothering DAP and to go after NGOs that hold hate-inciting protests.
