Motorist crushed to death by falling construction equipment at LRT extension site in Subang

SUBANG JAYA: A motorist was killed and another seriously injured Friday evening when construction equipment hoisted by a crane at an LRT extension site near Subang Airport fell and crushed two cars.

Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue Department operations commandant Hazinan Md Yusof said they received the distress call at 7.40pm and rushed to the scene to find that one person in a Nissan vehicle, identified as A. Vijaya Sigam, 34, had already died from the force of the impact, which crushed the roof of his vehicle.

"Another person in a Hyundai Sonata suffered serious injuries but survived the impact. We managed to extract him safely around 8.20pm before rushing him to hospital.

"The body of Vijaya was extracted 10 minutes later and sent to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre for a post-mortem," he said when contacted.

Petaling Jaya OCPD ACP Arjunaidi Mohamed said investigations were ongoing into how the construction equipment had fallen. He said no one had yet been detained over the incident.

Meanwhile, Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana), in a statement, said it regretted the incident at KM15 of Jalan Lapangan Terbang Subang.

"We have stopped all works involving the particular contractor on this section of the LRT Line Extension Project (LEP) and are working with the authorities to facilitate investigations of the incident.

"Safety has always been our priority," said Prasarana group director for project development, Zulkifli Mohd Yusoff.

"We thank the police and the Fire and Rescue Department personnel for their swift response at the site of incident," said Zulkifli.

"We regret the incident and wish to express our sincere condolences to family members of the motorist who passed away," added Zulkifli.

The site at Jalan Lapangan Terbang Subang is part of the LRT extension project to further improve the urban public transport in the Klang Valley.

Under the project, the existing Ampang and Kelana Jaya Lines will be extended by some 35km to give the benefit of the public transport system to more residents in the Klang Valley.
