Former Bank Negara Governor Ali Abul Hassan dies


KUALA LUMPUR: Former Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Ali Abul Hassan Sulaiman, 71, passed away at his residence No 3, Jalan 3, Kemensah Heights, here, at 4.45pm due to heart and lung complications.

Ali Abul Hassan (pix) will be buried at the Kemensah Heights Muslim cemetery after the Zohor prayers Tuesday.

He leaves behind wife Puan Sri Jamilah Ali Abul Hassan, a son and two daughters.

Born in Penang, Ali Abul Hassan served as the director-general of the Economic Planning Unit in the Prime Minister's Department for seven years until Sept 5, 1998.

He was also secretary to the National Economic Action Council.

He was appointed the sixth governor of Bank Negara from 1998 to 2000.

Ali Abul Hassan retired on May 1, 2000 and was succeeded by Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz and on April 17, 2001, was appointed special economic adviser to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir. - Bernama
