PETALING JAYA: Celebrity chef Datuk Redzuawan Ismail, better known as Chef Wan, blew his top and gave his son a severe tongue lashing after finding out that the latter had padded his resume regarding his work experience abroad several years ago.
Chef Wan said his son Mohd Nadzri Redzuawan (Chef Riz), the 29-year-old judge of reality show Masterchef Malaysia, must now “face the consequences”.
He said he scolded his son on Tuesday night, telling him that his actions were worse than a student lying in class.
“As an adult, he should be a role model to these kids. Shame on him. Now nak buat apa, nasi sudah menjadi bubur (there's no use crying over spilled milk)!” he said in a strongly worded statement on his Facebook fan page yesterday.
It was reported that Chef Riz was described on his Masterchef Malaysia profile on the Astro Ria website as having held the positions of chef de cuisine (head chef) and sous chef (direct assistant to the head chef) while working at New York's Italian restaurant Babbo and French restaurant Le Bernadin, respectively.
However, both critically-acclaimed restaurants headed by celebrity chefs Mario Batali and Eric Ripert have refuted Chef Riz's claims that he had worked there.
Chef Riz's Masterchef Malaysia profile has since been changed to omit any mention of those two restaurants and merely states he was previously an executive group chef at MXM International, Marcos Italian Restaurant, Titanium International Bistro, Thai King Crab Seafood Restaurant and culinary director of Real Food Corporation Meatworks Steakhouse.
He had earlier apologised to viewers for “overstating his qualifications” on the Masterchef Malaysia Facebook page while Astro Ria said it had accepted his explanation in good faith.
Chef Wan said his son must apologise to the public and “accept his unwise behavi-our”.
“Bukan senang menjadi bapa ini (it's not easy being a father), no matter how hard we try our best, there are always these challenges yang datang bertubi-tubi (repeatedly),” he said in another post later, prompting many fans to console him and urge him to forgive his son.
