JASIN: Two traders at the Jasin Ramadan bazaar were killed and two others seriously injured by flying debris during a freak storm that hit the area.

The dead were identified as Abdul Omar, 71, and Mahadi Mohamad, in his 40s.

One trader is in a coma and was admitted to the Malacca Hospital while another seriously hurt had been sent to Putra Hospital.

The incident happened at 5pm when some 30 traders were about to set up their stalls at the bazaar for the buka puasa crowd next to the Jasin Sports complex.

Merlimau assemblyman Datuk Mohd Hidihir said strong winds hit the area just before the storm, causing 21 of the bazaar tents to be blown off together with their metal frames.

“It happened so fast without any warning.

“Terrified traders ran helter-skelter when their tents were blown off,” he said after visiting the scene yesterday.

Flying debris and the metal frames struck several of them on the head and face, he added.

Authorities are still assessing the damage caused by the storm.

Malacca has been hit by several incidents of flash floods, including a minor landslide, in recent weeks because of evening and early morning storms brought about by the monsoon season.
