NO REDUCTION: (Sept 11) Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and police have agreed that there should be no reduction in fines for five serious traffic offences – speeding, queue-jumping, beating traffic lights, overtaking on a double line and driving on the emergency lane. Chan said the authorities would meet later to streamline the rates of compounds for other offences such as illegal U-turns and parking, wrongdoings involving driving licences and non-wearing of helmets by motorcyclists.

WAR ON CRIME: (Sept 11) New Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan stated that reducing snatch thefts and armed robberies would be his top priority when he officially assumed the post of IGP on Tuesday. He also targeted drug trafficking as another area of concern. Musa, 55, who has been going to the ground to hear the public’s grouses, said he wanted to regain public confidence in the force.
