MyTeam believes it can beat national football squad

KUALA LUMPUR: It may just be a “motley crew” of amateur players, made up of, among others, a restaurant helper, a toll collector, a boat operator, hotel workers and school leavers. 

However, MyTeam believes that it can take on the national football team tonight.  

Despite recent criticism by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), MyTeam players did not lose spirit and they were confident that they could beat the national squad after going through a comprehensive training programme for the past seven weeks. 

Last week, FAM general secretary Datuk Seri Dr Ibrahim Saad labelled MyTeam as a mee segera (instant noodles) team, saying that it would be a miracle for them to win the match. 

He also called on Malaysians to wear yellow shirts to show support to the national squad instead of wearing blue shirts to support MyTeam. 

MyTeam was formed through a 13-episode football reality TV show which went on a nationwide tour to select 25 players to play against the national team. 

Captain Hasmizan Kamarudin, 22, a boat operator from Besut, Terengganu, said: “What if more people turn up at the match wearing blue shirts? What happens then?” 

He said one should not assume that the team would not win just because they were the underdog. 

Referring to Dr Ibrahim’s instant noodles statement, goalkeeper Amir Shariffuddin, 26, from Ipoh, Perak, said: “Even instant noodles, when they have enough ingredients, can taste better than noodles which have been kept for too long.”
