RELEASE DETAINEES: (Dec 12) Asean leaders at the 11th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur called on Myanmar to release political detainees but fell short of mentioning pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi who is under house arrest. Yangon, in an immediate response, said it would invite Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar in his capacity as Asean Standing Committee chairman to explain its roadmap to democracy.
