A-G TAKES CHARGE: (June 12) The Attorney-General’s Chambers is ready to take charge of prosecution of criminal cases, which is currently handled mainly by the police, in all the Sessions courts. Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail said the move had already been set in motion, adding that it was in line with the recent recommendation of the Royal Commission Report on the Police that prosecution should be done by his Chambers and not the police.

HIGH SEAS DRAMA: (June 14) A gang of heavily-armed pirates believed to be from Aceh hijacked a Malaysian tanker off Langkawi. They surrendered after a 12-hour drama on the high seas. Their downfall was brought about by Mohamad Hamid, a 28-year-old sailor who dived into the sea, stole the pirates’ speedboat and returned with five police patrol boats, including a PZ15 gunboat. The drama began at 4am when the 10 pirates, armed with sub-machine guns and parangs, boarded the MT Nepline Delima seven nautical miles from Thai waters while most of the crew were asleep.
