Extra warnings near toll

IPOH: More warning lights have been put up along the 5km stretch of the Ipoh-Changkat Jering Highway between the Menora tunnel and the Jelapang toll plaza to alert south-bound motorists.

State Infrastructure and Public Utilities Committee chairman Datuk Ong Ka Chuan urged the motorists to be extra careful when approaching the steep slope towards Ipoh.

“After you drive pass the Menora tunnel, you should slow down and use a lower gear to control your car,” he told reporters after handing out road safety booklets and Chinese New Year gifts to motorists at the Ampang toll plaza here yesterday. The event was organised by the Kinta Rotary Club.

He said the danger was not the toll plaza where several fatal accidents had occurred in recent years but the slope towards the toll plaza.

Lorry drivers had complained that the braking systems of their vehicles get heated up and jammed up while coming down the slope.

“Without the toll booth, the danger of fatal accidents will still be there.

“Projek Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan Berhad (PLUS) is looking into the problem to find solutions,” he said.

He said PLUS was putting up extra toll booths to cope with the higher number of vehicles during the festive season.

Ong said a 24-hour emergency response team would be stationed at the toll plazas in Tapah, Kamunting, Kuala Kangsar and Ipoh Selatan.
