SEREMBAN: The proposed gathering by PAS dubbed Gagasan Selatan (South Coalition) at Kampung Ismail near here failed to take off yesterday as it did not have a police permit.
Led by Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and PAS Youth chief Mahfuz Omar, the people gathered at a nearby mosque after evening prayers before marching to Kampung Ismail.
However, they were stopped by a police roadblock.
Acting OCPD Supt Mohd Zin Ismail told them to disperse, whereby a fierce exchange of words ensued between PAS representatives and the police.
But after a 10-minute standoff, the crowd went to gather at the mosque before dispersing.
The PAS leadership re-assembled at the nearby Tabung Haji building and gave speeches to a group of about 150 people who left afterwards.
State police chief Senior Asst Comm I Datuk Abdul Majid Othman said the permit was refused because of traffic and security reasons.
A man, believed to be a taxi driver in his 30s was arrested after he failed to stop at the roadblock.
During the 7.10pm incident, a policeman was almost knocked down by the man, who was said to be speeding while negotiating a bend.
