PENANG: The marine police will step up their checks on merchant vessels, especially those from neighbouring countries, to ensure that their crew members were not linked to any pirate or militant groups.
Its commander Senior Asst Comm (I) Muhamad Muda said they were now working with the private sector and government agencies involved in the shipping trade to check on the background of the foreign crew.
