Works Ministry: Tech key to greener infrastructure

THE rapid advancements in technology spell good news for the engineering and construction sectors.

Works Ministry deputy director-general (technical sector) Datuk Azman Md Hashim said the use of the latest technologies can improve efficiency, sustainability, safety and long-term infrastructure performance.

“Climate change, ageing infrastructure, rapid urbanisation, resource constraints and evolving societal expectations require us to rethink conventional approaches and embrace innovation at every stage of infrastructure development,” he said during the officiating ceremony of the 19th East Asia-Pacific Conference on Structural Engineering and Construction (EASEC-19) on July 13.

He was representing Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan at the conference.

Azman said technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), building information modelling, digital twins, smart monitoring systems, advanced materials and automation are changing the way infrastructure is planned, designed, constructed and maintained.

He added that the Works Ministry is committed to strengthening the nation’s infrastructure ecosystem through sustainable practices, technological advancement and engineering excellence.

“We continue to support initiatives that enhance project delivery, improve asset management, strengthen resilience and promote innovation across the construction industry,” he said.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) deputy vice-chancellor (students and alumni affairs) Prof Dr Norinsan Kamil Othman said the engineering and construction sectors are evolving rapidly, driven by technological advancement, sustainability considerations, and the growing need for resilient infrastructure.

“Addressing these challenges requires not only technical expertise but also collaboration across disciplines, sectors and national boundaries,” he added.

Aside from technology, Azman said the future of engineering also depends on the talent available.

“We must continue to invest in talent development, research capability, professional excellence and international cooperation.

“Strong partnerships between government, academia, industry and professional bodies are essential to creating solutions that are practical, innovative and impactful,” said Azman.

Infrastructure, he added, is a cornerstone of national development as it supports economic growth, enhances connectivity, facilitates trade, improves public services, and contributes significantly to the community’s quality of life.

Co-organised by UKM with Universiti Sains Malaysia, The Institution of Structural Engineers, the Institution of Engineers Malaysia and the Asean Concrete Federation, EASEC-19 gathered together over 350 participants from 24 countries.
