Retired headmaster eyes next chapter

Celebratory send-off: Selvam (in purple shirt) with Yogarani beside him at the farewell ceremony.

HAVING served the teaching profession for 33 years, Selvam Perumal recently bade farewell to the civil service.

But the retired headmaster of SK Methodist (ACS), Seremban, Negri Sembilan, will not be resting on his laurels.

The 60-year-old has set his sights on contributing to the education sector still.

“I plan to continue as a principal in a private school,” he said in a press release.

Passionate about empowering the young, the Seremban-born Selvam chose education as the focus of his tertiary studies.

He completed his teacher training at Maktab Perguruan Sultan Abdul Halim in Kedah; pursued a Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Primary School Education at Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Temenggong Ibrahim in Johor; and attended the National Professional Qualification for Executive Leadership programme at Institut Aminudin Baki in Negri Sembilan.

Selvam firmly believes in upholding the virtues required of an educator.

“The teaching profession must be respected by the community and teachers should educate pupils with full dedication and love.

“The focus should be on academics and instilling good character in our pupils,” he said.

Selvam began his teaching service at SJK(T) Ladang Sabrang, Perak, in 1992. Over the years, he served in several schools in Negri Sembilan, taking on roles such as student affairs senior assistant, career and guidance counsellor, and senior assistant for co-curriculum and student affairs.

He was promoted to headmaster at SK Dangi, Negri Sembilan, in 2023, where he served for two years before being appointed headmaster of SK Methodist (ACS) in 2024.

During his service, Selvam took part in several international seminars, further broadening his expertise in the field of education. He also served as an assistant Scout commissioner for the East Seremban District.

His retirement ceremony was held at SK Methodist (ACS) on Jan 19. Also present was his wife Yogarani Rethinam.
