UMSC to offer 150 nursing scholarships annually to address workforce shortage

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya Specialist Centre (UMSC) will offer 150 full scholarships each year for students enrolled in its diploma in nursing programme, says UM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman.

The initiative is a strategic move to produce a steady stream of qualified nurses who will be absorbed directly into UMSC’s workforce upon graduation.

“University of Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) continues to play its role as the main pillar of UM’s academic and health services ecosystem,” Dr Noor Azuan said during his new year's address on Friday (Feb 13).

He noted that the hospital integrates clinical excellence, professional training, and medical research to maintain its position as a major regional reference centre.

To further tackle the nursing shortage, UM has also allocated scholarships to 135 diploma students from the university's College of Health Sciences (KSK).

“This is to ensure the continuity of a competent and sustainable health workforce,” he added.

Beyond healthcare, Dr Noor Azuan highlighted the university's commitment to student welfare.

In 2025, the university distributed RM2.51mil in welfare funds and RM3.43mil in zakat contributions to over 3,000 students.

The funds were used to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and digital needs, ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent students from achieving excellence.
