MUCM’s Prof Jayakumar to remain VC during court case, says university

MELAKA: Prof Dr G. Jayakumar will continue to discharge his duties as Manipal University College Malaysia (MUCM) vice-chancellor in accordance with the university’s governance framework and established policies, despite an ongoing court proceeding, said the university's management.

In a statement to The Star on Thursday (Jan 22), the MUCM management said it wished to inform all stakeholders that Prof Dr Jayakumar would remain in his position throughout the case’s duration.

"In line with the principles of due process and natural justice, the management of MUCM remains committed to fairness, objectivity and proper governance.

"Appropriate institutional processes remain in place to ensure continuity, stability and the effective functioning of the university,” the statement added.

On Wednesday, Prof Dr Jayakumar claimed trial at the Sessions Court in Ayer Keroh here to an alleged offence of deceiving the university’s former vice-chancellor over the appointment of a chief consultant involving a payment of RM20,000.

Based on the charge, the accused, who was then a senior lecturer at the university, allegedly deceived the then vice-chancellor into appointing a lecturer from Universiti Perdana Kuala Lumpur as chief consultant of the Curriculum Programme and Academic Development.

The appointment was allegedly made to develop an occupational therapy programme module with a payment of RM20,000, despite the appointment contravening the individual’s employment contract with Universiti Perdana Kuala Lumpur.
