RIGOROUS preparation, supportive lecturers and a disciplined mindset – his own recipe for success – have served Ng Yew Sheng well.

Not only did he clinch the Champion and Best Presenter titles in the individual category at the national level of the Deloitte Tax Challenge 2025, but he was also part of the Champion team that won the team category.

Fresh from his win on Nov 21, Ng, a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) graduate from Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), is gearing up for the Deloitte Southeast Asia Tax Challenge 2026 in Selangor on Jan 22 and 23, where he will once again compete in both the individual and team categories.

“I must highlight the dedication of my lecturers, Michael Yeo Thiam Swee and Suzzanne Poh Shuh Chen, who journeyed with me from my very first competition. Their dedication is a big contributing factor to my success,” he said in a press release.

In the team category, Ng was joined by Lim Li Yuin, Koh Ching Nghi and Genevere Foo Wen Shun. Both Ng and Koh picked up the Best Presenter prize.

Like Ng, Koh, also a commerce graduate, will compete in the team category at the regional level.

Recalling their national win, Koh shared that it came as a “pleasant surprise”.

“We knew each other through previous events and competitions, so we came together to form a team, with the approval of our lecturer, who recognised each of our strengths. We started our preparations via online meetings and later moved on to physical discussions.

“Looking back, having discussions with the whole team present was not only memorable but also motivating, as each of us could sense the team’s synergy and enthusiasm. This helped us dive deeper into complex topics and strengthened our teamwork,” she said.

For his individual win, Ng received RM4,000 in prize money, while the team victory earned them RM10,000.

Besides the Champion titles in both the individual and team categories, TAR UMT picked up the Merit Award in the individual category through Lim and Karanjot Singh, who each won RM700.

Meanwhile, TAR UMT also shone at the Deloitte Audit Business Challenge 2025, with Bachelor of Business (Honours) Accounting and Finance graduates Quek Wan Qi, Bryan Sim Myng Roong and Ong Lay Hong crowned champions, taking home RM8,000 on Nov 21.

Sim described the win as “an extremely rewarding moment”.

“Our foundation in auditing and financial reporting helped us analyse real-world scenarios, while teamwork ensured we stayed coordinated and confident,” he said.

During the competition, Sim took charge of audit procedures and review, while his teammates focused on technical analysis and presentation.

“One of the most memorable questions we faced required analysing key audit focus areas to identify potential findings and propose appropriate adjustments – a task that demanded both technical audit knowledge and strong professional judgement.

“It was challenging yet energising, and the process strengthened our teamwork,” he added.

All champions in both competitions stand to gain internship or job opportunities with the firm.
