Demand grows for international education

MORE students and families in South-East Asia and the Pacific (SEAP) are turning to an international education.

This is reflected in the number of students who took part in the Cambridge International Education (Cambridge) June 2025 examination series.

According to Cambridge, results were recently released to over 680,000 students worldwide, a 9% increase over last year.

Alongside the growing number of students, examination entries had also risen to nearly 1.7 million, a 7% increase from last year.

“In the SEAP region, more than 165,000 entries were made for Cambridge qualifications last June, a nearly 4% increase compared to June 2024,” it said in a press release dated Aug 12.

This growth reflects rising demand in key markets such as Malaysia, which recorded over 70,500 entries, a 2% increase.

Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand also posted increases, with over 33,000; 15,500; and 18,500 entries, respectively.

Cambridge added that while English, Mathematics and Science remain the most popular subjects tested, another indicator of changing educational priorities is the surge in entries for Cambridge International AS & A Level Global Perspectives – up 17% this year.

The subject, which encourages students to think critically about global challenges, conduct independent research, and articulate evidence-based arguments, has seen growing uptake across all stages of the Cambridge Pathway.

“As artificial intelligence transforms the job market, and as climate and global issues demand collaborative solutions, it’s no surprise that more schools are seeking subjects that equip their students to think beyond borders,” said SEAP regional director Kanjna Paranthaman.

The June 2024 Cambridge International AS & A Level results were issued to nearly 16,000 students in the SEAP region on Aug 12, while the Cambridge IGCSE and O Level results were released to over 30,000 students in the region on Aug 19.
