GREATER opportunities are on the horizon for the country’s engineering community, as one of its largest professional organisations received a significant boost recently.

The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) has been officially accepted as an authorised member of two global agreements: the International Engineering Technologist Agreement (IETA) and the Agreement for International Engineering Technicians (AIET).

The recognition was conferred during the IETA and AIET closed meeting, held in conjunction with the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) Meetings in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, from June 9 to 13.

With this membership, IEM gains the authority to assess and certify Malaysian engineering technologists and technicians for international recognition under these frameworks.

It also joins a select group of international bodies committed to upholding the highest standards in engineering education and professional practice.

According to an IEM press release dated June 12, this recognition facilitates enhanced career prospects, cross-border collaboration, and seamless mobility for Malaysian engineers in a globally competitive environment.

“IETA enables mutual recognition of the substantial equivalence of standards establishing the competency of practising engineering technologists.

“Through IETA, members, including IEM, strive to facilitate cross-border mobility for experienced engineering technologists by establishing a framework for their recognition based on confidence in the integrity of national assessment systems, secured through continuing mutual inspection and evaluation of those systems.

“Meanwhile, AIET recognises that a practising technician’s skills have equivalence with other qualifications and provides a framework for the recognition of the substantial equivalence of standards and quality assurance systems,” said IEM president Prof Dr Jeffrey Chiang Choong Luin.

He also reaffirmed IEM’s dedication to strengthening its role in the global engineering community and ensuring that Malaysian engineers are equipped with the credentials and capabilities to thrive on the world stage.
