Educating the heart

Education should start with the heart by teaching love and compassion towards God, teachers and students, says Fadhlina Sidek.

The heart of education is the education of the heart, the Education Minister said, adding that inclusivity was another important element when it came to character development.

“Instilling moral ideals like inclusivity leads to integrity, virtue, and good character, which is what it means to educate the heart,” she said at the inauguration of the Universiti Selangor (Unisel) library in memory of her late father, scholar Datuk Dr Siddiq Fadzil, on July 6.

Fadhlina said more than 10,000 books from his personal collection were donated to the Siddiq Fadzil Memorial Library.

“He would use book receipts as bookmarks, scrawled on pages and read everywhere he went,” she said at the varsity’s campus in Kuala Selangor.

Highlighting the importance of a responsive, future-proof education, she said the ministry was in the midst of planning the new 2027 curriculum.

Discussions on whether to reinstate the Primary School Achievement Test (UPSR) and Form Three Assessment (PT3), she added, were still ongoing.

Separately, she said schools were ready to be used as polling stations and teachers appointed as Election Commission officers were ready to carry out their duty for the Negri Sembilan, Selangor, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu polls on Aug 12.
