GROWING up, Gan Shing Ning saw how hard her parents worked to provide for the family and it motivated the Yayasan Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad (KLK) scholar to excel in her studies.

“My father was a welder and my mother was a seamstress. They were diligent in making ends meet.

“When I lost my father at an early age, I had to work part-time to support my mother in generating income for the family.

“Through this experience, I learnt the importance of achieving good academic results to improve my livelihood,” said the Universiti Sains Malaysia student who credited her parents with being good role models.

“I am grateful to be a recipient of the Yayasan KLK scholarship as I am now able to continue my tertiary education,” she said in a press release dated Nov 29.

Gan was among 14 young Malaysians under the Yayasan KLK Scholarship Programme who received their awards at a ceremony in Mutiara Damansara recently.

Fellow scholar Najwa Hannani Kamaruzaman, who is pursuing her studies in information technology at International Islamic University Malaysia, said she was grateful for the scholarship as it paved the way for her to achieve her dreams.

This year, Yayasan KLK awarded more than RM700,000 in scholarships to deserving and outstanding students to pursue their undergraduate studies at public and private universities locally.

Yayasan KLK, a foundation established in 1985 by KLK, offers scholarships to high-achieving young Malaysians who are studying or have gained a place at any Malaysian institution of higher learning. Upon graduation, scholars may be offered the opportunity to work in KLK or its business units.KLK chief operating officer Lee Jia Zhang said the scholarship programme aims to ease the financial burden of needy students with good academic results to continue their education.

“Apart from receiving financial support, the scholars will also have an opportunity to participate in our internship programme during their semester breaks.

“Through the internship programme, scholars will gain practical on-the-job training, and understand our business operations and corporate culture.

“This will give them a strong foundation and develop their marketability to begin their careers in a challenging business environment,” he said.
