A TOTAL of 56 secondary students from 14 schools in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur signed up for Salcon Berhad’s Smart Water Programme (SSWP) Inter-State Water Quiz Competition 2019.
Organised in collaboration with Water Watch Penang (WWP) and Universiti Sains Malaysia, the water quiz is aimed at exposing students to water related issues and to care for our water resources.
Participants were tested with questions categorised into Global, Local and National from general information about the local water service provider, water issues to general knowledge about water.
The competition marks a culmination of the year-long Salcon Smart Water Programme, which has been carried out on a bi-monthly basis by the company since 2010.
The SSWP is an outdoor activity usually held at the Bukit Kiara Park where participants are taught to conduct
physical, biological and chemical tests at Sg Penchala in order to identify the health of the river.
This involves water pH testing, water flow monitoring, water turbidity, dissolved oxygen testing and identifying aquatic organism using water monitoring kits. To date, the programme has benefitted more than 40 schools and 3,000 children.
“We are impressed with the enthusiastic response from the schools on the participation of the quiz competition.
“By having this competition, we are not only bringing students together to test their knowledge but also encouraging critical thinking on pressing environmental issues, ” said Salcon Berhad chief operating officer Ooi Cheng Swee.
Water Watch Penang committee member and life member Dr Hong Chern Wen said Water Watch Penang plays a vital role in educating the young generation on the importance of water management, saving and conservation.
“We will continue to promote the study, awareness and knowledge through educational programmes, seminars, lectures and talk.” he added.
Dr Hong thanked Salcon Berhad for supporting it since 2010 and hoped that SSWP will continue to benefit more students and teachers in future.
SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara emerged as the champion in the quiz competition followed by first runner-up, SMK Seksyen 5 Wangsa Maju, and second runner-up, SM Sains Hulu Selangor.
