EMERGENCY funds will be disbursed to all schools and education institutes affected by Typhoon Lekima.
The Education Ministry said 329 schools and education institutes in Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Pahang and Terengganu will have the aid disbursed through their respective State Education Departments, District Education Offices, Polytechnic and Community College Education Departments and other relevant agencies.
The damage caused by the tail end of Typhoon Lekima caused an estimated RM20mil in damages, the ministry said in a statement last week.
It added that the most number of schools and institutes damaged were in Kedah with 115, Penang (101) and Perlis (58).
Among the places severely damaged is the Penang Matriculation College in Pongsu Seribu. The strong wind ripped off a big portion of the roof, causing its zinc panels and steel beams to detach from the building and crash into the foyer area. Fortunately, nobody was injured.
The typhoon hit Malaysia as it continued towards China and Taiwan, causing heavy storms leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
