DURING the recent Teachers Day celebrations, the Taylor’s Alumni Relations Office organised a special event to celebrate Vijaya Samarawickrama, a Taylor’s University lecturer from the American Degree Transfer Programme(ADP).

Fondly known as Mr V, he will be retiring soon, after 60 years of impacting minds.

About 60 ADP alumni gathered at the Lakeside Campus to celebrate the legend — a teacher, a friend, a motivator and an inspiration.

Chuah Shu Guan (right), an ADP alumni from 2005 and former ADP student council president who had also taught in the programme previously, recalled how Vijaya’s classes brought out the extrovert in him. “Mr Vijaya was an excellent teacher who played an instrumental role in making me more outspoken and bold,” he said.

George Francis Albert and Khaled Amru Ambok Chening are former ADP student council presidents while Bryan Koh currently holds the position.

All three took to the mike to share their personal memories of their former lecturer during the event.

The Taylor’s Alumni Relations Office created a special award in recognition of his 60 years of nurturing young lives and inspiring education.

Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences executive dean Dr Matthew Johnson presented the award to Vijaya.
