THE Faculty of Architecture and The Built Environment (FABE) and Architecture Student Council (ASC) of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology recently hosted the 27th Annual National Architectural Student Workshop 2015.
For the first times, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology was given the opportunity and responsibility as the first private university to host the five-day workshop with the theme “Future Is Now”. It was supported and endorsed by Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM).
The workshop was initiated by the university’s vice-chancellor Prof Emeritus Datuk Parid Wardi Sudin in 1987. It serves to gather, exchange and share knowledge among both public and private architectural institutions nationwide.
“Limkokwing University of Creative Technology became the first private educational institutions entrusted to organise this year’s annual workshop.
“This workshop enabled the participants to understand their responsibility in sharing the idea of building more sustainably and efficiently through architecture,” he said.
The theme was inspired by university president Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing.
Deputy Education Minister Senator Chong Sin Woon opened the workshop which had over 1,000 participants, lecturers, architecture students from 15 public and private institutions and industry partners.
“Students majoring in architecture and architects need to produce quality products and meet the international standards in order to compete with global industry players,” he said during the opening ceremony at the workshop.
Institutions which took part included Limkokwing Cambodia; Taylor’s University; Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara Pasir Mas; Politeknik Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah; Universiti Sains Malaysia; International Islamic University Malaysia; Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia; Universiti Putra Malaysia; Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia; UiTM Seri Iskandar, Perak; Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai; Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman; UCSI University; Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur and City University College of Science and Technology.
The series of modules were based on the journey in constructing the future built environment and developing the technology in various interactive activities. Some of the activities included creating 3D representational structures to reflect each participating university’s characteristics, building ‘Dragon Spine’ sticks to explore kinetic energy application and studying ‘Illuminance’ techniques to add extra dimensions or movement on static objects.
These activities gave students from the other institutions an insight on Limkokwing University of Creative Technology’s learning approach and its multicultural environment.
Limkokwing University of Creative Technology encourages its students to take part in various activities to gain work experience and multicultural exposure. Students learn to develop networking skills that will allow them to overcome cross-cultural barriers within the most globalised environment.
