SJK (T) St Joseph’s in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, was started in 1924 by the nuns of St Joseph’s Catholic Church. The aim of the school was to provide the children of Keretapi Tanah Melayu’s largely Tamil staff with an education.
The school remains the only Tamil girls school in Kuala Lumpur.
At present, it accommodates 150 pupils, and has 14 teachers, headed by B. Valarmathi. In its 91 years it has achieved many academic and non-academic successes.
In the UPSR examinations it won the High Potential Award in 2011 and, in 2012, received four best achievement awards.
In 2014, the school ranked second out of 15 Tamil schools in Kuala Lumpur, with a 100% pass rate in English Language, Mathematics, Tamil Language (Writing) and Malay Language (Writing).
S Joseph’s illustrates the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. Although it is housed in an old building, it is up-to-date technologically speaking.
The school’s computer lab has an interactive board that allows for more creative teaching.
Furthermore, all the classrooms are equipped with LCD televisions and CPUs for the pupils to do their group and individual presentations.
The school’s aim is to empower its pupils with knowledge and to teach them that, ultimately, education is not preparation for life, but is life itself.
