An athletic graduation

NATIONAL athletes were among the 6,116 who recently graduated from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

They included Mohd Razie Abd Rahim for men’s hockey, Norbaini Hashim and Rabiatul Adawiyah Mohamed for women’s hockey, Chai Fong Ying and Chai Fong Wei for wushu, Sharon Koh Suet Len for bowling, Cheng Chu Sian for archery and L. Kunasilan for karate.

Of the 6,116, 391 received their PhDs, 2,123 their Master’s degrees, and 3,380 their undergraduate degrees, while 222 obtained their diplomas.

UPM chancellor Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah conferred scrolls on the graduates during the first and second sessions of the convocation.

UPM pro-chancellors Tan Sri Dr Nayan Ariffin, Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek and Tan Sri Rozali Ismail also presented scrolls to the graduates.

Also present at the ceremony was UPM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Fauzi Ramlan.

The university conferred the Honorary Doctor of Plantation Management to Datuk Seri Abdul Wahab Maskan, the Honorary Master of Literature to Datuk Aripin Said and the Honorary Master of Science to Megawati Suzari.

Emeritus professor awards were presented to Datuk Dr Makhdzir Mardan, Dr Md Ariff Hussein and Dr Zakaria Abdul Rashid.

The chancellor also presented the Chancellor Gold Medal, the Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Rashdan Baba Gold Medal and Putra Agribio Medal to an agricultural science graduate, Anna Arina Abd Halim.

The Royal Education Award in the Bumiputra category went to Ana Masara Ahmad Mokhtar who is a biomedical sciences graduate and the non-Bumiputra award went to Sugentiran Mane, a software engineering graduate.

Other university medals and awards that were presented included the Alumni Gold Medal to Ong Chia Lin (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine), the Yayasan Pak Rashid Gold Medal to Faslina Habeeb Mohd (Bachelor of Computer Science) and the Syed Kechik Award to Nor Amira Mohamad (Bachelor of Arts (Foreign Language) Majoring in Arabic).

UPM also introduced two new university awards.

Tthe Doctor of Philosophy gold medal was conferred on Effendy Mohammad Yaacob (Electrical Power Engineering, Faculty of Engineering).

The Master’s degree (with thesis) gold medal, went to Loo Yuet Ying (Master of Science in Food Security, Faculty of Food Science and Technology).

Muhammad Farhan Mohd Fadzil, the university’s first Bachelor of Science in Architecture student, from the Faculty of Design and Architecture, also graduated.
