Teachers Day, meaningful no matter what

"What has been your most memorable Teachers Day?” The question sounded like something someone might ask during an interview for the school magazine. I mumbled a safe and expected response, something about how every Teachers Day has been memorable in its own way. But later on when I really thought about it, there were very few Teachers Day that had actually meant something to me, which was rather depressing considering that I have been a teacher half my life.

Perhaps I have not been teaching in the right schools. Perhaps things are different in some other schools but throughout all these many years, Teachers Day has become more of a drudgery than joy for many teachers. It is just another school event like Sports Day or Speech Day; something we’ve got to have and the sooner we get over and done with it the better – and with as little fuss as possible of course.
