Hope of an academic renaissance in Iraq is alive despite the enormous rebuilding of facilities and faculties that lies ahead, reports PETER SLEVIN.  

IT would be difficult to overstate the problems facing the science faculty at Basra University, which already had fallen behind international standards before the looters came. Now the computers are gone, the laboratories are in a shambles and the fate of the current semester is in doubt.
