UNIVERSITI Malaya (UM) deputy vice-chancellor of student affairs Prof Datuk Dr Hashim Yaacob has been promoted to the post of vice-chancellor.
As UM’s eighth VC, Prof Hashim will assume office for a term of three years.
“I am grateful to the Education Ministry for entrusting me with the responsibility,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday. Prof Hashim succeeds Prof Datuk Dr Anuar Zaini Md Zain, who had been the vice-chancellor since April 1, 2000.
“I hope all staff members will continue to give their support and cooperation to uphold UM’s tradition of excellence,” said Prof Hashim.
A dental surgery graduate from the University of Otago, New Zealand, Prof Hashim has been actively involved in the field of dentistry since joining UM in 1975, and was dean of the Dentistry Faculty.
He was promoted to the rank of professor in 1987. Prof Hashim was credited for raising the standard of UM’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery, which gained recognition from the General Dental Council of the United Kingdom in 1997.
In 1995, he was conferred the Fellowship in Dental Surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons England and in 2000 and a Fellow of the Academy of Science.
The new UM VC is also a Commander in the Royal Malaysian Navy Reserve Forces and is active in the field of literature. He has written and edited five anthologies of poetry. His other achievements include winning the Silver Award for his scientific invention of a pharmaceutical product – Remopain – at the International Invention Competition in Geneva in 2001.
Kelantan-born Prof Hashim said his achievements are an example of what one can do regardless of one’s financial background.
“I was not from a rich family... this goes to show that anybody can be a somebody with perseverance and hard work,” he added.
