FOUR students from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) have received Student Excellence Awards from STM-ExxonMobil.
The four – Aini Zubaidah Sa’adullah, Suziane Haslinda Suhaimi, Tan Chei Huey and Lau Pui Sian – were the first recipients of the award introduced by the School of Information Technology (STM) and ExxonMobil for students with both academic and co-curriculum excellence.
The students were presented with their awards, worth RM1,250 each, from UUM deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs) Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak who represented the vice chancellor.
In his speech, Dr Mohamed Mustafa urged students to use their time at university wisely and to prepare well for the working world.
“You must be willing to gain experience and exposure as much as possible by participating in the various areas available here at the university. Participation in co-curricular activities will help you acquire inter-personal and social skills. When you go into the job market, you will realise that theoretical knowledge and knowledge of concepts are insufficient.”
Dr Mohamed Mustafa's views were shared by ExxonMobil representative Rosnah Ismail who said that the company allocated RM1mil for education initiatives with the aim of improving the quality of graduates in the country.
