Centre helps special needs children right into adulthood

WINGS MELAKA, a Christian non-governmental organisation, had its beginnings in early 1997 when a group of parents led by school teacher Lee Boon Hock and housewife Yammy Ang embarked on an outreach programme for special needs and ‘mentally challenged’ children.

The centre began by conducting the Early Intervention Programme (EIP) in 1998 at a double-storey house in Taman Sinn in Ujong Pasir with about 15 preschool children between two and six years of age who were experiencing learning difficulties. The EIP helped them in six major areas such as reading, writing and early numbers skills, gross motor skills, language development, fine motor skills, self help skills and social development.
