JOHOR BARU: DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang’s decision to contest in Gelang Patah is based on a survey conducted by the Opposition.
State Opposition leader Dr Boo Cheng Hau said that there is popular demand for Lim to be fielded here and the party eventually decided that he should contest for Gelang Patah.
“The survey was completed in June last year and all that is needed was the approval of the party leadership.”
He added that MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek’s recent statement stating that the Opposition were trying to pit the Chinese against the Chinese was incorrect.
“Yes, Gelang Patah has many Chinese voters but they are only a minor majority as the area is still considered as a mixed seat,” he said.
He added that instead of belittling Lim, Dr Chua should also announce where he is planning to contest.
“We do not make any decisions based on race and in fact, this time we, DAP, PKR and PAS will be fielding a mix of Chinese, Indian and Malay candidates.”
Asked if there would be any swapping of seats since the Gelang Patah parliamentary seat (previously contested by PKR) was now contested by DAP, Dr Boo denied if there was such a move.
“DAP will not exchange the Gelang Patah seat for Segamat or Bakri or the state seats of Johor Jaya or Tangkak as speculated by some parties.”
