JPJ officers to go undercover for CNY road safety

KUCHING: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is going undercover.

Its enforcement officers will masquerade as passengers to monitor express bus drivers and book errant ones during the Chinese New Year festival.

Its director-general Datuk Seri Solah Mat Hassan said the officers concerned would observe and record traffic offences and monitor beha-viour of the drivers.

Prompt action would be against the drivers and the bus companies, he warned.

“Summonses will be issued to the driver immediately at the end of the destination,” he told reporters at Kuching Sentral here yesterday.

He said the exercise was part of a nationwide road safety enforcement operation in line with the festive season.

Solah said enforcement officers would also be stationed at all bus terminals throughout the country, including four in Sarawak, to ensure that public transport operators would comply with the rules.

He said the operation would also involve enforcement officers from the National Anti-Drug Agency (ADK), adding that JPJ officers would check on the tyres and brakes of the buses before they departed while ADK officers would check on the drivers to ensure they were free from drug and alcohol influence.

Solah said JPJ would also step up enforcement at various black spots or the accident prone areas.

“We will station our enforcement officers at 87 black spots while the police will deploy personnel at 107 black spot areas throughout the country.

“We hope with the presence of JPJ and police at these black spots, it would change the drivers’ attitude while driving home and back to their work places during the festival,” he said.

He said the exercise would involve 1,500 JPJ enforcement personnel in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, and 250 personnel in Sarawak.

Solah appealed to Sarawakians to travel by public transport mainly for safety reasons during the festive holidays, adding that about 25 operators were providing express bus services in Sarawak.
