MORE than 100 medical and house officers from AIMST University shared their experience on the housemanship programme during a workshop in Port Dickson recently.
The inaugural pre-induction and career advancement workshop was attended by officers from various government hospitals and health clinics in the country.
Organised by Aimst Medical Alumni Association (AIMSAA), the event was held at Corus Paradise Resort.
AIMSAA chairman Dr Sri Ganesh Muthiah said the workshop was held to provide an avenue to allow senior doctors to provide guidance to the juniors on housemanship.
“We felt it was necessary as we read or heard about the tremendous stress which our house officers go through. There were even reports of some doctors being referred to the psychiatric department for stress,” he said.
Several speakers, including Perdana University professor of Community Medicine Prof Dr K. G. Rampal, Academy of Family Physicians chairman Prof Datuk Dr M. Thuraiappah and Selayang Hospital Consul-tant Palliative physician Dr Richard Lim spoke on career advancement opportunities.
Dr Sri Ganesh said Mercy Malaysia also conducted a volunteer induction programme to recruit doctors and house officers to join in humanitarian projects in Malaysia and abroad.
Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister A. Kohilan Pillai, who was the guest of honour, praised AIMSAA for its initiative to create awareness among members.
He also hoped other alumni members would organise similar events to recruit volunteers for humanitarian projects.
Mercy Malaysia has 69,334 registered volunteers including 656 from the medical profession, of which only 800 to 1,000 are active volunteers.
There are between 50 and 60 active medical practitioners.
AIMSAA which was registered in March last year and launched by Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam a month later, has 530 medical graduates serving in various hospitals and health clinics.
