LADIES dressed in dazzling and eye-catching traditional costumes vying for the ‘1Malaysia Queen’ title caught the attention of shoppers at the Sunshine Square shopping complex in Bayan Baru, Penang.
Organised by Sunshine Wholesale Mart Sdn Bhd, the contest saw nine talented participants taking to the stage with confidence and charmed the audience with their sensational performance.
1Malaysia Queen winner Sharmeen Looi Mee Leng, 19, said it was an unexpected win as there was strong competition from other elegant contestants.
“My family encouraged me to join the competition and I decided to show the spirit of 1Malaysia by singing the renowned local song, Rasa Sayang.”
Looi, who was speaking to reporters after winning the competition on Sunday, said it took her two days to translate the lyrics into three different languages that included Mandarin and Tamil to reflect the country’s diverse culture.
Meanwhile, first runner-up Siti Norhasnida Hasri, 25, who is also the winner of Best Traditional Costume award, surprised the audience with her quick costume change during the 1Malaysia cultural dance.
“I reckoned it is best to combine different cultural dances to capture the judges and audience’s attention,” she said.
Second runner-up Rosesabrina-wati Ramlan, 30, a mother of two got her creative juices flowing by reciting a poem that she wrote during the talent performance.
Two other contestants — Pearly Hoo, 19, and R.M. Perema, 22 — were crowned Popular Queen based on the audience’s votes and Talented Queen respectively.
All the winners walked away with a cosmetic gift set, vouchers, a sash and a tiara each.
