Calling all former Thomas Cup legends

THE Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has invited all former players who had represented Malaysia in past Thomas and Uber Cup competitions to be part of this year’s championships to be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.

BAM general manager Kenny Goh said the players, who had played for the country since 1945, were also invited for the official dinner at the Palace of Golden Horses in Seri Kembangan on May 8.

“The invitation to the former national players is to show our appreciation to their contribution to the nation as badminton players.

“As former players, their presence will be an inspiration to the current shuttlers,’’ said Kenny.

In the Thomas Cup, Malaysia are in Group D with Japan and Nigeria. Besides world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, the other members of the team are Wong Choong Hann, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Tan Chun Seang, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Ong Soon Hock-Hoon Thien How.

As for the Uber Cup, Malaysia are in Group A with defending champions China and United States.

The players in the Uber Cup squad are Wong Mew Choo, Lydia Cheah, Julia Wong, Tee Jing Yee, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo, Ng Hui Lin-Goh Liu Ying.

The top two teams in preliminary rounds will qualify for the quarter-finals and a fresh draw will determine the match-up for the knockout stage.

Many of the cuurent players in the Thomas and Uber Cup squads will get the chance to get some motivation when they meet the former greats.

Kenny, who is also the acting general secretary, said the Thomas and Uber Cup finals would be an excellent opportunity for the former national players to get together.

“Many of them may have lost contact with one another. This Thomas and Uber Cup finals will give them the chance to meet to recall their old playing days,’’ added Kenny.

The BAM is sending the invitations to the players. But Kenny said they were unable to trace several players as the BAM did not have their addresses.

“We will be happy if they can get in touch with us soon,’’ said Kenny.
