Man dies after vehicle plunges into 30m ravine in Tawau

Firefighters trekked 30 metres down a ravine at Mile 38, Jalan Kalabakan, in Tawau on Wednesday morning (March 12) to retrieve the victim.

KOTA KINABALU: A man was killed after his vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a 30m-deep ravine at Mile 38, Jalan Kalabakan, in Tawau, Wednesday (March 12) morning.

Firefighters from the Tawau Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the scene, located 165km away, after receiving an emergency call at 9.10am.

Tawau fire station chief Jemishin Ujin said upon arrival, the rescue team used a special stretcher to retrieve the victim and handed him over to the police for further action.

It is understood that the incident was discovered by several individuals foraging for wild ferns in the area, who spotted the overturned vehicle in the ravine.

The overturned vehicle after plunging 30 metres into a ravine at Mile 38, Jalan Kalabakan, in Tawau on Wednesday morning (March 12).

The operation, led by operations commander Shameer Abd Rahman Hamid, involved five firefighters and was supported by personnel from the police and the Civil Defence Force.

Authorities confirmed that the victim, an unidentified adult male, was pronounced dead at the scene by police officers.

After ensuring there were no further hazards, the operation concluded at 12.30pm.
