Cops arrest two private drug rehab centre volunteers for allegedly assaulting inmate

NILAI: Police have detained two volunteers at a private drug rehabilitation centre here for allegedly assaulting a 38-year-old inmate.

Nilai police chief Supt Abdul Malik Hasim said a woman lodged a report at the Broga station near here on Tuesday (March 19) alleging that her brother-in-law had been assaulted since he registered at the centre three months ago.

"The victim has injuries all over his body and he is now receiving treatment at a government hospital. He is due to undergo surgery soon," he said in a statement.

Supt Abdul Malik said the two suspects are aged in their 20s and 40s and were picked up on Wednesday (March 20).

He added that the police have also obtained an order from the Magistrate's court to remand the suspects until Sunday (March 24).

Supt Abdul Malik then said that the case is being probed under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

It carries a jail term of up to 10 years or with fine or with whipping or any two of such punishments, upon conviction.
