CHUKAI: Over 2,000 runners soldiered through prevailing hazy conditions here at the Mesra Run 2.0 held in conjunction with the Terengganu-level 2026 National Sports Day celebrations.
Mesra Mall general manager Aziam Muhammad said the number of runners doubled from last year’s 1,000 participants.
However, she said the route for the second edition was shortened to reduce risk from the poor air quality, with the competitive 10km category reduced to 5km without changes to the prizes.
“Thankfully, the change did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd, which packed the entire outdoor area of Mesra Mall on Saturday (Oct 10) as the event still offered a 5km ‘fun run category along with a 3km family walking route,” she said when met on Sunday (Oct 11).
The enhanced 2026 event, organised by the Suria KLCC Sdn Bhd-managed Mesra Mall, was flagged off by Terengganu federal development director Datuk Abdul Kahar Abdul Latif.
Afterwards, Suria KLCC chief executive officer and executive director Francis Tan presented prizes to the winners.
Aziam said the response from participants and support from stakeholders and the Terengganu Youth and Sports Department have been encouraging.
"The Mesra Run 2.0 event is also a continuation of our mental health awareness campaign, which emphasises the importance of physical health as one of the factors supporting mental well-being," she said.
She noted that the event is part of Mesra Mall’s efforts to position itself not just as a shopping destination, but also as a public space for leisure and recreational activities.
"This year, 14 other sporting events, such as archery and badminton, are being held as part of Mesra Run to encourage more people to adopt an active lifestyle," she said.
In this speech, Abdul Kahar said the event aims to encourage people to make sports and fitness a regular part of their lives.
"We want participation in sports to keep growing and active lifestyles to be sustained at all times.
"National Sports Day 2026 also emphasises more inclusive public participation, encompassing senior citizens and persons with disabilities," he said.
