The spirit of unity and tradition shone bright in Salak South New Village in Kuala Lumpur as residents gathered to celebrate a joint Malaysia Day and Mid-Autumn Festival at the local community hall’s basketball court.
Children eagerly queued for complimentary festive packs, balloons and LED lanterns at the start of the event, which was enlivened by lion dance and live singing.
The festivities also featured games, lucky draws and a mooncake-cutting ceremony.
At 8pm, organising chairman Banie Chin briefed participants before they embarked on a 2km lantern procession through the village.
Leading the parade was a lantern-covered lorry, transforming familiar streets into a moving ribbon of light.
Traditional orange and yellow paper lanterns swayed alongside modern rabbit-shaped creations as children, parents and seniors walked together in celebration.
Chin said the annual event, held for about two decades, aimed to strengthen community ties while helping younger generations appreciate the traditions and customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival traditions.
By combining the celebration with Malaysia Day, organisers also hoped to highlight the country’s multicultural spirit and encourage the sharing of cultural traditions across communities.
